You choose when you pre-register
SINNA, the pre-registration system, is where you pick the place. You choose between SRE’s Oficina Central in Mexico City and one of its Módulos de Atención al Público, and then pick a day and time from a calendar. The reference number arrives at the email address you gave.
Choose the place before you choose the date. Availability differs between the central office and the modules, and a slot two weeks earlier in a city you have to fly to is not the bargain it looks like. How SINNA works
Which offices give the exam
Naturalization is not handled at every SRE delegation, and the set of modules that handle it has changed over the years. Current sources do not agree with each other about the exact list, and some of the pages that sound most confident are years old — the most-cited source in Spanish for this question is a post from 2023.
So rather than print a list that may be wrong for your month, use the two that are authoritative and current at the moment you file: the module list SRE publishes, and the choices SINNA actually offers you during pre-registration. If a place is not offered in SINNA, it is not an option, whatever a blog says.
If you are planning around travel, confirm the location twice: once when you pre-register, and once in the week before your appointment.
What happens on the day
- You arrive at the office you chose, at the time on your appointment, with the file and the original payment receipt.
- You hand in the documents. If something is missing, this is where you find out — which is why the file matters as much as the studying.
- You take the exams. The history and culture exam is 10 questions in 10 minutes, in Spanish, with 8 correct to pass. The Spanish test is an interview, a reading and a piece of writing worth 6 points, with 5 to pass.
- If you do not pass, SRE sends a second appointment for about 15 business days later. You get two attempts.
What to bring
- Your appointment confirmation and its reference number.
- The original fee payment receipt.
- Your valid resident card and your valid passport.
- The complete file: birth certificate apostilled and translated, criminal-record certificates from both the federal and state authorities, and the statements you signed.
- Time. Treat it as most of a day, not an errand between meetings.
If you cannot make it
Missing an appointment is not free. A no-show at the second exam appointment counts as a failed second attempt, which starts a one-year wait and a second payment of the fee. If something unavoidable comes up, contact SRE before the date rather than after it. What happens if you fail
Questions people ask
Can I take the naturalization exam online?
No. Both exams are taken in person at the SRE office you chose during pre-registration.
Can I take the exam at a Mexican consulate abroad?
No. The process requires residency in Mexico, and the exams are taken in the country.
Can I change the office after I have booked?
Ask SRE through the channels on its appointment page. Do not simply turn up somewhere else — your file is attached to the appointment you booked.
How long does the appointment take?
Longer than the ten minutes of the exam. You are also handing in and having a file checked, so plan for most of the day.
